Answer:

Turf toe is a condition of pain at the base of the big toe, located at the ball of the foot. The condition is usually caused from either jamming the toe, or pushing off repeatedly when running or jumping. The most common complaint is pain at the base of the toe, but you may also have symptoms of stiffness and swelling.

When you bend your big toe upward, and you pull your bog toe muscle. It's very painful.
Acutal turf toe is a sprain of the ligament of the plantar (bottom side) of the first toe. It is common in many sports such as football. It is a painful injury but it is not serious. Sometimes it is mistaken as a strain of the muscle that flexes the toes. The treatment is the same and involves wearing a stiff-soled shoe and turf-toe taping if possible.
