Long Term untreated shingles? Also what are the different treatments? I have seen so many doctors about this I now have sever PHM (nerve damage) but most doctors have no understanding on PHN or long term shingles? Please help.

Answer:

this is a big problem for long term sufferers of shingles which is herpies Zolster. it first appears normaly when you are young in form of chicken pox. but stress or imune deficency or alchohol can all contribute to shingles hsowing back up.

short term shingles.

get to a doctor within 2 days to less than 2 weeks.then take the anti viral they giv you. thay may also give you antidepressent and vicodine. and you may neeed sleep medicne also.

for log term shingles and PHN

anti-virals dont normaly work in this case. and you probably have developeed PHN (post herpnatic nerolga) this is because herpies zolster is a virus that attaks the nerves in the skin. It can also effect nerves in deigestive track. SO DONT DRINK ALCHOHOL till you are sure you are rid of it. the best treeatment for thepain of PHN (which can be very painfull) is Lidocain Patch, Vicodine, and Valium, buut doctors rarely prescribe valium (dorks - even on the American pain foundation they say that docs should not worry about addiction to these drugs. The main reason is the Pain is severe. Xanax or Valium work best for the restlesness at nighttime. The lidocain patch works great with no side effects and I recommend it most. But there is also Neurontrine it is for anticonvulsion medicine but works great for limiting the pain. I had shingles for 10 years and went 6 years before i saw a doctor. But it was too late for anti viral and I ended up with a doc who prescribe acyclovar (anti-viral) but because mit was way to late I ended up breaking out around my eyes and eybrows and it was very painfull and took a month to go away. I finally had to stop the anti viral and since have not had severe break outs of shingles.

OK.shingles, chicken pox, fever blisters and herpes are all right up the same alley. Just slight variations of the virus. These "erruptions" are caused by the nerve endings becoming inflamed and irritated and they have to have some place to go - up and out! That tells you why you have the PHN. As far as treatment... short term would be using an antiviral medication (like one of the 'cycloviers) just when you think you are having an episode. Long term would be taking the medication daily to try to prevent the episode in the first place. Taking antiviral medications doesn't mean you won't have the episode, completely, it may only mean you have a shorter and less severe episode.
