What is best medicine for a cold, cough and hoarse throat
A few general ideas to help: at the first sign of a cold, start Zicam; at this point it may help reduce the symptoms a bit.
Sleep with the head of your bed elevated slightly so your throat won't swell during the night (use a few pillows or elevate the head of the mattress or bed). Take tylenol or advil for the pain. Gargle with warm salt water, 1/4 tsp salt in one cup warm water, a few times a day. Sip on cool/cold liquids throughout the day to reduce the swelling in your throat and keep yourself hydrated; liquids containing Vit C are good for mucous membrane health. Use a cool mist humidifier, or breathe in some steam from some boiling water (don't get too close so you won't burn yourself), or take a steamy shower and breathe in the steam.
If your throat feels too tight and hurts so much that you can't swallow, go to an ER.
Otherwise rest with your head up and keep yourself warm. A cold normally takes about 10 days to run its course, although sometimes the cough will last longer than that.
