Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), also known as acute myelogenous leukemia, is a cancer of the myeloid line of white blood cells, characterized by the rapid proliferation of abnormal cells which accumulate in the bone marrow and interfere with the production of normal blood cells. AML is the most common acute leukemia affecting adults, and its incidence increases with age.
It's cancer of the blood and bone marrow.

A very close family member had AML.

It's termed acute because it progresses fast and effects the immature cells instead of the mature cells.

Normally, the bone marrow produces the immature cells in a controlled way which mature into various types of needed blood cells.

In AML the immature cells instead develop into abnormal white cells, so they can't produce the normal cells needed for the blood.

New immature cells replace the mature cells, so what ends up happening is fairly quickly the abnormal immature cells crowd out the healthy cells.
