What is a typical recovery experience with mediastinoscopy

health advisory Hospital Diseases 2007-11-12 17:56:02

I'm scheduled to have a mediastinoscopy in a few weeks. Had a bronchoscopy that was inconclusive so this is the next step. Do you have more pain than the bronchoscopy? Any side effects? Anyone had experience with this procedure?

Answer:

Unfortunately, it is safe to expect that your mediastinoscopy will be more uncomfortable than a bronchoscopy. Since a mediastinoscopy actually involves an incision.

Most doctors do put you under general anesthesia, so during the procedure, you'll be asleep and will feel no pain. Afterwards though, you may have some soreness in the incisional area, and possibly some of the same type of pain from the tube they insert, like during a bronchoscopy.
