What is a VRE test

health advisory Hospital Diseases 2007-11-12 17:56:02

Doctors said they were going to give my niece this test. They said it has something to do with dye injection. But, my sister does not know what the test is looking for. The baby is a year old and she has a major UTI. Does anyone know what this is?

Answer:

VRE stands for Vancomycin Resistant Enterococcus. Enterococcus is a naturally occuring bacterium that is usually not harmful. It appears in your intestinal tract, but can infect other parts of your body, such as your urinary tract, bloodstream, etc.

Vancomycin Resistant strains of the bacteria are resistant to the affects of antibiotics, and therefore very difficult to treat.

I really don't know much about this area, I just went and read a little on the internet about it. This is my primary source:

It stand for 'vancomycin resistant enterococcus' They do a culture and susceptibility test to find this organism. I am assuming that they will collect a urine culture, check to see if there is Enterococcus growing, and then test the isolate against the drug Vancomycin to see if it is resistant to it.

It doesn't have anything to do with dye injection - they may be talking about something else.

Go to this website and it may assist you in what you are wanting to find out.

How is VRE diagnosed?

If your doctor suspects that you are infected with VRE, he or she will send a sample of your infected wound, blood, urine, or stool to a lab. The lab will grow the bacteria and then test to see which kinds of antibiotics kill the bacteria. This test may take several days
