Answer:

Follicular thyroid cancer has a tendency to be pretty aggressive and blood vasculature found around the tumor is more extensive as well. Complete removal is often the best route of treatment from what I have seen. It cuts the risk of the cancer metastasizing to other areas such as lung, bladder or bone. Many times, this type of cancer can be cured if complete removal is performed and the cancer is localized to the thyroid.

If the cancer is a possibility, even remote, there is no question that you should have surgery. Staving off treatment will allow the cancer to grow and invade other areas; ie; lungs ect and by that time, any treatment will be too late. If you are still hesitant, seek a second opinion from an oncologist. I have provided a link for you to help understand your options.http://www.endocrineweb.com/cafol.html...
Get a second opinion from another specialist. If it's the same recommendation and you decide not to have the exploratory surgery, it's a toss up of dying a painful needless death from cancer or having another thyroid problem being unresolved and causing havoc with your body. It's a no-win situation. Either way, if you have the surgery, you can catch whatever the cause is and correct it. If it's cancer and you let it go, it will spread to the lungs, brain and other parts of your body. Please don't take a chance!
I had a papillary thyroid cancer, and it spread to a nearby lymph node. I needed to have my thyroid and my lymph node removed. I originally went into surgery to have lymph node removed and biopsied because they only suspected thyroid cancer. The kept me under and removed my thyroid.

Your possible cancer could spread to other parts of your body making it more difficult to treat.

The surgery recovery was not bad, a few days. It was adjusting to being on thyroid hormones that was tough, that took months.
