What causes our noses to be blocked

Our bodies often react to potentially dangerous airborne allergens or things that they 'think' will make us sick by producing more nasal mucus, and attempting to rid the body of contaminates. There's also this weird thing where only one nostril will work because it's giving the other nostril a break. The human body is a strange mechanism.
