What can I do about extremely dry skin due to hard water

health advisory Hospital Diseases 2007-11-12 20:38:07

I recently moved to Stuttgart, Germany from St. Louis, Missouri. I've been having skin trouble here where I've been getting these bumps and patches of dry skin everywhere. The water is hard here & there is a lot of calcium in the water. I think that may be the problem, but I'm not quite sure what I can do to get my skin back to it's normal self without moving back to St. Louis. haha I've never had skin problems like this before. The bumps and patches have been progressing a lot lately & I've made sure it wasn't my soap or shampoo since it's all the same & so is my laundry detergent & fabric softner. Please help! My skin thanks you!!

Answer:

Well, yes it is the soap and detergeants you are using, in a way, that are making you itch. They combine with the calcium and lime in the water to form a curd, which ought to be called crud, that doesn't rinse away completely. What is left on your skin and clothing is irritating and drying. Without installing a water softener, there is only one other option. You need to locate a product called Calgon Water softener, or even Boraxo. It's usually sold near the laundry products. If you are affiliated with the military, it's sold in the commisary there on the laundry products aisle. Anyway, buy it and add it to your bath water and mix up some for rinsing your hair after a shampoo. Also add it into the washer along with your detergeant. Don't rely on the amount of suds you produce to indicate if you have enough soap in the water you use. Hard water cuts down on suds production, so you tend to use more than you would ordinarily. I also lived in both Germany and Belgium, so I've had lots of experience with this. You will have scale build up on the glasses, pots and pans, and the bathroom tub and sink. For that you need LimeAway. For you, get the Calgon or Boraxo to soften the water. That should solve the itchy skin problems. Also, if you buy regular Calgon bath powder or liquid, it will do the job in the tub without the other stuff. Of course, you can't wash your hair with that added in. Hope you feel smoother soon, you made me itch in memory!

Moisturise mosturise mosturise - and use a really good one - morning, noon and night - everytime you wash hands etc
Cetaphil Lotion applied after each bath/shower, and as often as necessary.
Find a pure and natural soap and creams -

do not use anything with a mineral oil in them it hardens skin more not helps (no vaseline, baby oil or mineral oil)

Make a sea salt scrub if you can't find one to buy.

Take olive oil and kosher salt and a dash of brown sugar and lather on in the shower - it may help the water situation.

Dry skin types have to be extremely careful to protect their skin.Yogurt-honey combination helps dry skin. Make an egg pack with a yolk, a teaspoon of honey, a tablespoon of milk powder. This is beneficial to dry skin types. There are many helpful tips to cure dry skin at
