What are the tests given to find out if there has been mini strokes
A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is focal brain ischemia producing sudden neurologic deficits that last < 1 h. Diagnosis is clinical. Carotid endarterectomy, antiplatelet drugs, and warfarin decrease risk of stroke after certain types of TIA.
Tests will be done to rule out a stroke or other disorder that may cause the symptoms. Tests to diagnose a TIA may include:
* CBC and PT tests to rule out a blood disorder
* Head CT scan or cranial MRI
* Carotid duplex (ultrasound)
* Echocardiogram
* Cerebral arteriogram
Additional tests and procedures may include:
* Blood glucose
* Blood chemistry
* Serum lipids
* ESR (Sedimentation rate)
* Tests for syphilis
* ECG
* Chest x-ray
Your doctor may use these tests to check for hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, high blood lipids, vasculitis, and peripheral vascular disease.
Please see the web pages for more details on Transient ischemic attack.
You could have an ultra sound of the artery(S) in the neck etc
an MRI or head to your eye doctor they can "see" things too.
My father in law had about 3 mini strokes and they found a blocked artery in his neck - he was moments from a major stroke - so don't take those little ones lightly.
He had numb hands, and as if a shade was down on his eye partial vision -
co-ordination=making them look from side to side=getting them to use each hand to take something from you=giving them a drink of water to see what side is worse\=having them walk a bit for you ===whatever side is the hardest for them to use in any of these things is the side the stroke happened on
I've had the tests an MRI scan a CT head scan and an EEG, it turns out that I have had quiet a few mini strokes over a number of years. I had a subdural heamatoma 2 years ago and was on life support for 11 days I have a sodium deficiency so whenever my speech was slurred I was putting it down to that. I'm 49 and I remember having this happen to me over 16 years ago along with memory loss and going numb down my left side and now I know the reason why, I have to change my lifestyle only I'm here, lucky me. I look very healthy and have a few health problems my family are worried about me only I tend to joke about my problems, my way of coping as the more you think then you worry.
CT of the head would be your first test for a TIA, transient ischemic attack or mini stroke. They may also check your d-dimer which is a blood test that determines how suseptable your body is to forming clots. Although the d-dime depends on many factors such as age,gender, and race.
Really this would need to take the form of scanning, usually MRI.
Carotid ultrasound, cat scan or mri of head, thorough physical examination by a neurologist.
Stoke is an injury to the brain, and usually CT scans are used to detect any damages to the brain. MRI can also be used.
