health advisory Hospital Diseases 2007-11-12 20:38:20

Hyopthyroidism runs in my family and for years I have wanted to know if I have it. Im just not sure of the symptoms.

Answer:

There are many symptoms of the condition. You can have a few symptoms or have most of them. Here are some I can think of offhand; weight gain, difficulty losing weight with diet & exercise, IBS with constipation, dry skin, dry thinning hair, sensitivity to light, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, low body temp, fatigue, increased cholesterol levels, muscle & joint aches, depresion, mood changes, headaches, sleep apnea, ridged fingernails with no moons, decreased sex drive, menstrual changes, voice changes, and cold feet & hands.

Testing should involve a morning blood test of TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and an antibody test. Most of the time, doctors only test TSH and often at any time of the day. This could stop or delay a diagnosis, so TSH should always be done first thing in the morning.

One of the most common symptoms of hypothyroidism is weight gain, but another symptom that applies to women is if they have irregular menstrual bleeding that takes them to their gynecologist to figure out why the irregular bleeding. I just learned this from my gynecologist on Thurs.
