Answer:

Sometimes this is a sign of insulin resistance (pre-diatbetes of sorts). Being overweight is also a sign of this problem. You definately need to consult your pediatrician. It's possible that they will refer you to an endocrinologist for further evaluation/treatment.

I had this same thing as a teenager. The endocrinologist put me on a low dose of a diabetic medicine. Unfortunately, the medicine dropped my blood sugar levels too much so I had some nasty side effects (passing out, dizziness.) Now I just watch my diet more closely.

Being he's slightly over weight have you had him tested for diabetes? I would call the MD and just have him seen.

It could be simply just a skin condition or a sign of something like diabetes. Best to have your medical MD tell you otherwise.
