What are chances my baby will be this way
i have a family gene where at least one boy in my family will have an aging defect that dont appear until 3 to 6 moths old. i dont know what is called and my mother says it cant be detcted until after the baby is born. how do i know im carrying a baby with this defect and what are the chances of having a baby like that?
Answer:What you are talking about is called progeria. You might ask your obstetrician about this. They could probably do an amniocentesis and tell you whether or not your child could have this. It will save you months of worrying. Now that you know the name of it, do some online research. I think it's very rare and is probably caused by a recessive gene which means that your husband would also have to have the gene for it to affect any of your children, although they could still be carriers if you have the gene. And just because there's a history of this in your family doesn't mean that you carry the gene for it.
Again, ask your OB doctor about it. He or she may refer you to a genetic counselor who could tell you whether or not you have anything to be concerned about. Good luck with this.
I believe that you are talking about progeria. This is fairly uncommon, however you may want to talk with a genetics counsler before conceiving.
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Researchers, led by a team of scientists at the National Human Genome Research Institute, have discovered the gene responsible for progeria, the rare and fatal genetic condition that causes accelerated aging in children
I found this by typing in aging disease in my google toolbar. Check it out. But to be more sure, ask your Physician on your next visit.
if its genetic and you carry one gene and your spouse has no gene, i believe it would be a 1 in 4 chance. i like the answer given above, however. i would speak to a specialist.
