Very mild case of chicken pox

health advisory Hospital Diseases 2007-11-12 20:37:11

I received the chicken pox vaccine on 4/4/07. I am 30 years old and have never had the chicken pox. Within a week of getting the shot, I started getting very itchy, mostly at night just before bed. I figured this was dry skin, so I used lotion. It didn't help. Now, 3 weeks later, I'm having extreme bouts of itchiness every night (to the point where I'm scratching for a half hour, literally), either before bed or in the middle of the night. I'm also itchy during the day, but not as much. And, in the areas where I'm itching, I've noticed a small bump or two in each itchy spot, which I scratch off and they scab over. The itching it mostly on my back, but I've also been itchy on my arms, legs and in my hair. Are these the chicken pox? I know you can contract a mild case of them after getting the vaccine. I would think this is a very mild case, if that. I would see my doctor about it, but what can they do if it is the chicken pox?

Answer:

It could be mild chicken pox but it's unlikely (the vaccine contains either dead or very weakened virus). It sounds more like hives (from an allergy or stress) but it's hard to tell without actually seeing it. If it is mild chickenpox, there would be nothing your doctor could do except tell you to stay away from others who haven't had it before. Since it's a virus, it just has to run it's course. If it is hives, you can take an antihistamine or use topical antihistamines. You can find pictures of both if you do a Google or Yahoo image search, that way you can compare what you have with actual cases.

yes- I'd say that's what it is and yes at your age you need to tell the doctor!
