Urinary Tract Infection not going away

health advisory Hospital Diseases 2007-11-12 20:37:15

I went to the doctor a few days ago and was tested for a Urinary tract infection. Nothing was found in the urine test but the doctor said he'd put me on amoxicilin [5 day dose] b/c i might be starting one. I have all the signs of a UTI. Burning when urinating, cramps, feeling washed out, feeling the constant feeling like I have to go to the bathroom but I really don't. I have more energy, cramps are gone, and the burning is as well. I want the feeling of having to go to the bathroom all the time to go away. It's starting to scare me. Doctor is doing a "culture" on it and will probably call me tomorrow. It's just so uncomfortable feeling like you have to go to the bathroom 24/7 for 5 days now. I'm just worried.

Answer:

As a healthcare provider, I can say that a culture will tell the doctor what bacteria is causing your infection, but more importantly, what antibiotic to use to kill it. My only question is why he did not use Bactrim (unless you are allergic) or Cipro (unless you are under 18) as these are the drugs of choice for urinary tract infections. Obviously the Amoxicillin is not the correct antibiotic or it would have got rid of alot of your symptoms by now.Your culture report should be back within 3-4 days after it was submitted. You need to contact the provider and tell him you are still having symptoms.

I would go back to the Dr or even thr ER if you have to. There might be something even worse going on there, and if so you need to find out what it is ASAP.
You should continue to take the medication and drink plenty of water and cranberry juice.
The culture should give you the answer. It is possible to have a UTI without burning, etc. The anti-bioctic may have killed some of the bacteria but not all of it. That could be the reason you still have the constant urge. I have fought UTI's all of my adult life and my urologist cannot find out why i keep getting them.
