Tumors and migraines, how are they related
The term "migraine" is a much abused term by most people. What we have to realize is NOT all headaches are migraines. A classic migraine is a severe headache PRECEEDED by an "aura" (usually visual disturbances) by a few minutes. Migraine headaches are also associated with intolerance of bright light and loud noises. Finally, the cause of migraine is vascular, meaning it has everything to do with blood flow and tumors rarely cause migraines.
How do tumors cause headaches? The brain itself has no pain receptors. If it were possible to slice the brain without going through all surrounding structures first, YOU WOULD NOT FEEL ANY PAIN. It is the covering of the brain (the meninges), the blood vessels within the brain and the bone, muscle and skin encasing the brain which is able to feel pain.
Benign tumors can cause headaches by increasing intracranial pressure and stretching/compressing the meninges and or blood vessels. Malignant brain tumors can cause pain by invading directly into bone or any other pain sensitive tissue.
They can be, but not always.
Its NOT a TOOMAH!
