Trying to get off Opiates

Ive been taking 20mg a day avg of Hydrocodone for 1 year. I recently switched to oxycodone (percocet) for the past couple weeks at 20 mg per day thinking that maybe switching to a different opiate will help. Will this help lessen the withdrawals since I havent been on percocet that long and just stop taking that?

Answer:

You should not stop any type of opiate cold turkey. Hydrocodone and oxycodone are very similar. Why are you suddenly wanting to stop the percocet? Your Doctor should advise you as to how to taper off the drug if you don't need it anymore. Don't stop all at once or on your own. Seek help..withdrawal can be dangerous (and no fun at all)..Good luck.

Are you still having withdraws to hydrocodone? Typically, if you're on another drug it will cancel out the withdraw of the other. However if you go a day without, you're risking withdraw from both.
at them amounts you dont have withdrawals. want off them just dont take them. and im real sure you know the difference between oxys & loratab you just took a zanex and forgot or something :]
Oh Hon, at 20 mg a day you don't go into withdrawal effects. I am seriously ill and take six to ten times the amount of Vicodin ES, top that with a Morphine substitute patch every 3 days and have to take muscle relaxers on top (BTW, for over 5 yrs.). Now if I stopped cold turkey, that would be withdrawal, but not what you take. However, don't do it alone, there are certain meds your doctor can give you to slowly take you off opiates all together. Be patient, it takes time. What you've done for over a year, can't be undone in a week. And if you don't need them out of medical necessity, then remember, while it will be an uncomfortable process, it is still "Mind over matter". That might sound cold, but before I got this sick I was stuck on them before after serious cancer surgery. I got off and had my life back only to get hit with 2 back to back accidents, resulting in the above. Hon, believe in yourself, get as much outside support as possible and stay strong. I believe in you, and if I can, so can you. Again, mind over matter. If you ever need to talk, don't hesitate to call on me. I know how it is and will try my best to talk you through. Stay strong! Best wishes, MsB.
