he is 13 and has had a lot of trouble with his ears when he was younger but has been fine for 8+ years and the ent had discharged him the doc has now given him an urgent referal back to the ent and was very concerned about his hearing loss i am worried sick he may lose his hearing anyone else been threw this or know anything about it
thanks
Answer:I don't. But my best mate's girlfriend is an audiologist and she says that they can do amazing things with implants these days. Don't worry if it does come to the worst, i am sure they can fit him with something almost invisible that will allow hi to have almost normal hearing. But if he has been fine thus far, i am sure it will all be ok.
I definitely would take your son to the ENT. The "eardrum" is actually referred to by doctors as the "tempanic membrane". It is a somewhat translucent mebrane (tissue) that stretches between the three bones of the inner ear. Sound waves enter the ear and cause the thin membrane to vibrate. The vibration is picked up by the auditory nerve and is sent to the brain to be processed and interpreted as sound.
There is hope for your son. He can have a procedure in which they insert cochlear implants into the ear and it serves as sort of an artificial tempanic membrane (eardrum). Your ENT should have some pamphlets with information about the procedure. Good luck!

I agree with first answer you have received. I am not a medical person but a close friend of mine was born deaf - she has amazing ear implants, can speak exactly the same as you or I and is a forensic investigator! She leads a very busy life, has travelled the world and is due to get married. Her life has not been affected in any way by this. Try not to think the worse - this may not be the case. Good luck. x
