1/3 of the lowest normal is around 50. If your platelet function is good, it may not be a problem, as function is way more important than count when it comes to preventing problems.
If the function is impaired as well, that means you're likely to have some bleeding problems and bruise easily. The two do often go hand in hand.
The next step, if your doctor hasn't done it yet is to run some coagulation tests. They're called PT and PTT. (And maybe a template bleeding time.) You can call and ask if those were done on your blood sample, and whether they were normal. If your coag studies are normal, your platelet function is normal, and the problem is not an emergency.
A number of things can cause a decrease in plt count, and it's up to you and your doc to work together to find out what's going on. But even the most serious of platelet deficiencies are ultimately treatable. Good luck!
Edited: I realized that by saying a platelet count of "50" I was using a clinical shorthand. That is, 50,000. We often shorten in in scientific notation as 50 X 10^3. So the normal value is 150 to 450.
less than 40,000 isn't good.
If it's that low, you need to get more tests to confirm it and have a blood workup, and not blow it off.
So did they tell you that you have thormbocytapenia, did you get a diagnosis. Without knowing what happened it is hard to advise. Can be caused by the above "disease process" or many things. Chemicals mold exposure, stress, heredity etc. need to post what the doctor spoke about. Just saying your platelets are low is not enough. if you can add to this someone else may also be able to help you.
