I had a thyroidectomy 5 days ago and I am wondering if the

things I am experiencing have happened to anyone else?

I am having tingling in my hands and lowers legs and my feet. I have been cold to the point of shivering but have no fever. I also have developed a small "knot" about an inch above the incision, and it hurts. Also, I am worried about gaining a bunch of weight. I was under the impression from my doctor the reason for my weight gain to begin with was due to the goiter I had.now I am reading all of these people had weight gain after the thyroidectomy.can anyone give me some insight?

Answer:

I'm not an endocrinologist, but as a psychiatrist, I often run into thyroid illness, since often patients who present only with emotional sx actually have an undiagnosed thyroid illness.

Thyroidectomy is the preferred treatment for a host of thyroid illnesses, whether ones which initially cause too little, or conversely, too much, thyroid hormone.

After surgery however, both those who started with too much, and those that started with too little (this was probably case for you), thyroid hormone, ALL end up with the same problem. low and almost never high thyroid hormone...! Reason: the surgeons are 'aggressive' and proactive--they remove (or radiate) an 'aggressive' quantity of thyroid, in a sort of 'insurance policy' approach most patients appreciate.

become 'hypo'thyroid (= deficient in thyroid hormone). One important 'bright spot' for you to know: ONLY patients whose docs 'neglect' to routinely check the current levels of T hormone are at risk of the effects of the medicine

Have they put you on thyroid meds yet? Sometimes they wait a little bit after surgery before doing that. Once you're on the meds though you will begin to lose the weight and feel better.
I did not have a thyroidectomy but, I did consume radioactive iodine to "disable" my thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is where your metabolism live. No gland, no metabolism. So, unfortunately, It is very easy to maintain the weight you already have and it is very hard to take it off also. It will be very very easy for you to gain weight. Carbohydrates are now your enemy. They must have you on a thyroid replacement medecine? Eat the right foods and excercise is your answer for not gaining weight. Good luck. God Bless.
well, ur thyroid is supposed to stimulate metabolism,so that sounds lyk almost all the symptoms of hypothyroidism, as for the bump it might been because of the tissue healling process and the seditive wearing off.
