Sunbeds- Are they ever OK

health advisory Hospital Diseases 2007-11-12 20:35:53

I have really fair skin and use sunbeds before going abroad as it stops me burning, I know I should just wear a high factor and stay out of the sun but as I only use them once a year for a few weeks are they really that bad? I don't really sun bathe either.

Answer:

Tanning beds are NEVER a good idea.

You will age your skin prematurely and greatly raise your risk of skin cancer.

Tanned skin is damaged skin. Tanning is the skin's response to injury. Think about it - you are blasting your skin with radiation - the body then makes more of its own sunscreen (melanin) to try and protect you the next time.

If you want a lot of wrinkles and skin cancer, keep doing it!

UV light damages DNA. Damaged DNA causes cancer. Is cancer really that bad?
i used to get in the tanning bed ALL the time, and i got in it one to many times.. i never burn.. but i got this white puffy spot between my breast and i thought it was nothing, well then, the white puffy spot went away and a red rash came... i got tinea versicolor.. its treatable but really aggrivating. im treating it now but i have it on my stomach, neck, and a little on my back. ill never get back in a tanning bed again.
