Strep Throat
I Have Had Strep Throat For About 1 Week And A Half And My Doctor Gave Me An Antibiotic Called Augmentin...But It Doesnt Seem To Be Working At All...I Still Am Getting Fevers And My Throat Hurts So Bad I Dont Wanna Eat Or Drink Anything...I Have Been Taking The Medication For About 5 Days And There Is No Improvement...can someone tell me why?
Answer:Was it for sure strep throat? A lot of times the rapid strep test is negative, but they'll treat it as though it were strep anyways (in case the culture is positive).
You could have a viral infection, which would explain why it's not getting better with antibiotics.
I think you should go back to the doctor. It could also be a peritonsilar abscess, which would need stronger antibiotics.
You may also need IV rehydration if you're not able to drink a lot.
Hope you feel better soon.
You will probably need a stronger antibiotic. Try amoxicillin by prescription, of course.
pennicilin can help alot. thats what i used to take and in a week i am going to get my tonsils removed from chronic tonsilidis! i am SO scared, But then i got allergic to pennycilin. Or have them prescribe ammoxycilin!! should help. eat popsicles and gargle and drink or let sit in back of your throat ( ice water) helps ALOT!
Wow...a bunch of bad medical advice! First, Augmentin is a great antibiotic. It is Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid...so if the Augmentin does not work & you try amoxicillin as another user suggested..you'll fail again! Really, your doctor will have to culture your pharynx (throat) to know exactly how to treat you & what antibiotic to use. Also, augmentin (& amoxicillin) are both types of penicillin. Either way, you mentioned that you were about 5 days into treatment. It is extremely important that you continue your antibiotic treatment. Very often, symptoms will not go away until day 10 or 14! If your problem persists for over 2 weeks, go back to your doctor. Best of Luck!
possibly the wrong antibiotic, you should feel better after approx 48 hrs after commencing them.
Was the strep dx made by a rapid strep test or a culture or just based on what your throat looked like and the symptoms you complained of? Maybe you have mono. It has been at least 10 days now, so the dr could do a rapid mono spot test. Antibiotics will do NOTHING for mono. Augmentin (like someone previously stated) is amoxicillin and c. acid. It's a pretty standard med for strep. You need to go back to the dr to rule out mono and CMV. A simple CBC would indicate whether it was viral or bacterial.
