Stop taking ambien for insomnia

health advisory Hospital Diseases 2007-11-12 20:36:46

I have to take Ambien 10mg because whenever I get tired at night, I lay there for hours and hours and end up finally sleeping at 4 AM or not at all

I really want to stop taking my sleeping pills for many reasons, does anyone know how long most people stay on it?

Answer:

I had adverse reactions to ambien. You should really talk to your doctor before you stop any sleeping medication. Some of them do have to be slowly withdrawn.

If its not working for you, let your doctor know.

Many forms of insomnia are are a brain chemistry problem. Sometimes taking medictaion is the only way to deal with the problem. Dont let people guilt you into making your problem worse.

Insomnia is often caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression or sometimes for no apparent reason. Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. Soak a tablespoon of mint leaves in a cup of water for an hour, drink every night. Check out http://useinfo-insomnia.blogspot.com/... for more info
Hi Mary,

The body can become dependent on sleeping pills very easily and often when people stop taking sleep aids their insomnia is much worse than the origional insomnia before the sleeping drugs.

Insomnia can have many causes, it can be caused by caffeine in drinks or chocolate, withdrawal/rebound symptoms from day time tranquillisers or other sleep aids or alcohol etc. It can be caused by job or relationship stress or adverse reactions to medications etc. The list is very long. If I were you I would try to figure out the cause of your insomnia and then figure out non drug ways of correcting the cause of your origional insomnia. Usually people need or at least should very gradually reduce the dose of their sleep aid so that the body becomes dependent on a lower dose and then reduce further so that way when you eventually stop completely your sleep aids you should not get any severe rebound insomnia. Insomnia is not the only withdrawal symptom from sleep aids some people can get nausea, muscle cramps, anxiety, strange dreams etc. Don't fear this though as these unpleasant withdrawal effects only occur when people just stop taking their sleep aids over night after months or years of use. Reducing slowly most people notice little or no side effects and after some time off the sleep aids people often find that they sleep much better and feel more refreshed from natural sleep.
