Staph infections
are staph infections contagious?if yes then how do you get them?my neice has one and i have 3 kids and im worried they could get it from her.
Answer:The response from the "Former nurse" really scares me...First, staph does NOT cause pneumonia or sore throats (strep does...strep throat)! For the most part, you have nothing to worry about. Staph is a micro organism that lives on our body at all times. It is possible that it can infect us on occasion; for that reason, staph is called an "opportunistic invader" (it will infect us if the opportunity arises). For example, if we have a breach on our skin such as a cut, or if our immune system is down because we are stressed out or if we have an immune problem such as AIDS...this would be the perfect time for Staph to infect us. This is why we put antibiotic ointment on our skin when we get a little cut--we are trying to prevent a staph infection. To be safe, it would be a good idea to wash your hands between touching your niece and your children.
Now, there are currently thirty-one species of staph...some are more contagious than others...so be careful! Also, impetigo can be caused by staph, but is more commonly caused by strep Type A. Strep tends to be a bit more contagious. If your niece has this, take extra steps to limit contact. Best of Luck!
Staph infections range from pneumonia to so-called stomach flus to wound infections to sore throats (and on and on). Staph is quite infectious, but spreading the bacteria can be easily halted by frequent hand washing and frequent laundering and use of a clothes dryer. If someone has impetigo, for example, don't share the same clothing with another child unless it has been laundered and dried first. Utensils also must be kept clean. These simple steps should take care of it.
There are different stage staff infections. Some are VERY contagious, some are not. It depends on which stage your niece is at.
I wonder wat type of staph infection your niece have.
However if she have staphylococal scalded skin syndrome(SSSS), it is likely to be contagious especially in a nursery where the condition is called Ritter's disease...
SSSS is characterised by large area of the skin peeled off appearing as if the skin have been scalded..
Hope dis helps
