Spitting Blood

health advisory Hospital Diseases 2007-11-12 20:36:49

What does it mean when your coughing up blood? Does anyone know what this means or why it happens? Like everytime I spit it's not regular saliva, it's a light reddish thing.

Answer:

go to the doctor asap

Are you talking about blood tinged spit, or sputum?

If you find your spit is blood tinged, it's probably coming from your mouth. That is often the result of bleeding gums due to poor hygiene. Often people brush their front teeth well, but neglect their back teeth (which are harder to get to). They look at their front teeth and gums and don't see the redness and swelling of the gingivitis starting in the back of their mouths. It takes very little for inflamed gums to bleed. Something as simple as eating, the suction produced when drinking through a straw, or drawing on a cigarette can start them bleeding.

If you're talking about blood in your sputum (phlegm brought up when you cough), that can be much more serious. You should see a doctor ASAP. Blood in sputum is often the first sign of tuberculosis. A serious, contagious, lung infection.

Figure out whether the blood is in your spit or sputum. Then make an appointment with a dentist, or doctor ASAP. Both conditions need to be treated quickly, before they progress.
