Scoliosis

I go to a junior high, and our district nurse recently tested me for scoliosis. She said that I had a "spine curvature" and that I should have it examined by "a physician or orthopedic surgeon".

I think my mom set up a doctor's appointment, and I'm kind of nervous. It definitely seems like I have scoliosis (whether it's a minor case or not, I don't know).

If it's really bad, will they have to put an iron rod in my spine? Will I need surgery? If it's not that bad, is there just some medication I can take?

Thanks!

Answer:

My daughter had scoliosis when she was about 10.It was not bad enough for surgury, but she had to wear a brace for two years. This was very uncomfortable and a little enbarrasing for a young girl but it worked, she went from 16 degree curvature to about 4 degrees. This is much better than surgery or being cripppled for the rest of her life. You should be happy they discovered it early..Nuf Said

Don't believe everything you hear. When it comes to life-threatening diseases like that, you have to get multiple opinions. If I were you, I'd go see that doc you're about to see, then see another one after that... People get misdiagnosed ALL THE TIME. DOCTORS AND NURSES MAKE MISTAKES. That's the problem with Americans, we are so blind!
If the scoliosis is serious you will need surgery because its very dangerous to your lungs.
actually the dr. has this brace that you wear under your cloths and it will straighten you up. dont be nervous you'll be fine.
Calm down, you'll be alright. If its a minor case, most likely they will brace you, depending on your age and curvature. A brace, you'll just wear numerous hours a day, for a certain amount of time. Surgery is not usually recommended for people until the curvature reaches around 50 degrees or so, or if you are in tons of pain. If you do have surgery, it will not be an iron rod, they will use either stainless steel, or titanium. Most likely stainless steel. Scoliosis cannot be fixed by simply taking medication, though I wish it could be, it's not a cold, it's a spinal deformity. An orthopaedic surgeon will initially do some more x-rays, and will remeasure your curve, and then will decide to either prescribe you a brace, watch the curve, send you to physical therapy, or in the extreme case talk to you about surgery. He will probably do a combination of those. First my doctor was watching my curve, and I was sent to physical therapy, then, when my curve reached about 50 degrees, we started to talk about surgery, and finally, did surgery when it hit 58 degrees. I hope this has answered your specific questions, if not you can e-mail me.

Good luck to you.

Noone can answer your question for sure because there aren't any definite answers. Most scoliosis patients end up not needing to do surgery. Without looking at your curvature and any medical history, you can expect anyone to tell you what the treatment option is going to be.
