STDs and Pregnancy

When my friend was 33 weeks pregnant, her boyfriend came home with a note from the dr. saying he had HSV II. Well this fool never told her doctor and her daughter was born with it. The baby had a 2 week hospital stay getting treated with Acyclovir through an IV. The doctor's said that the baby shouldn't have anymore problems with the herpes. My friend still hasn't told her doctor and insists that she hasn't had any symptoms. I've told her to get treated anyway, but she just won't listen! Any comments or suggestions would be helpful....

Answer:

If the baby had HSV when born then that means that the mom had an outbreak at the time of birth. Someone can have HSV and still give birth vaginally and the baby not get it. This is IF there is not an active outbreak at the time. If there is one then the Doctor usually does a c-section. This lady is very lucky as HSV can be very bad for an newborn baby. It isn't life threatening but it could have caused her blindness as well as many other things.

As far as the mom telling the baby's Doctor.First I have to ask what symptoms etc did the baby have when born? Second if it was not that bad then the Dr does not necessarily have to know unless the baby has an outbreak. These outbreaks are very painful and if it is in the genital area ( yes I have seen them other places) it also helps if the area is kept dry and being in a diaper will not keep it dry. The benefits out weigh the cons.
