Prosthetic heart valve
brothers valve failed, how would you go about warning people in similar position to be carefull
Answer:Firstly the failure of a prosthetic valve can be life threatening and treatment should be sought urgently. There are two types, mechanical, which increases the risk of blood clots, and biological, which should be replaced every 10 - 15 years. The recipients of one of these valves should maintain a healthy life style as we all should know, do not smoke or drink to excess, keep weight down and take regular excercise the patient feels comfy with. The
biological valve will require blood thinning medication such as warfarin for life. Atrial fibrillation, which I suffer from, is a general warning that the valve is not functioning correctly. Also , a must, keep blood pressure down.
