My son is 9 and he is shy & will not look a new person in the eyes should I be concern w/ Aspher
He looks me in the eyes he is just shy to other people Do you think he will out grow it or Do you think the problem is deeper
Answer:Welllll, it all depends on if there are other symptoms. Check to see if he:
- Seems rude in his speech
- Rocks back and forth incessantly (or a similar action)
- Can't read body language/emotions
- Shows a limited amount of facial expressions
- Has restricted (and usually age inappropriate) interests
- Can't understand verbal instructions
- Has a monotonous voice
- Dislikes being touched (e.g. hugging or touching him on the shoulder)
- Cannot interpret idioms (e.g. 'Keep your hair on!')
- Is pedantic (e.g. when you say 'Would you like to [...]?' he may reply 'No' )
If he shows any of those signs, it could very well be AS.
If this is not the case, he will probably grow out of it, so don't worry! :)
It could simply be a social anxiety disorder. If you think it is more serious, i would have him tested. If nothing else, that would ease your mind.
I'm really shy and have always been around new people, it could just be his personality.. I mean, some people are just born shy, others obnoxious, and there is really nothing you can do about it, if it's personality you can't "grow out of that", and you should just accept him for who he is.
