Brief warmup, then stretch (stretch should be a light pull, not painful), workout.

It keep the muscles from cramping .In addition to stretching, be sure to keep yourself hydrated. Good Luck!
Becuase you shorten the muscle fibers when you work out, so you need to spend at last 5 minutes stretching them back out. This will increase your flexibility and movement, as well as preventing muscle aches and pains the next day.

Before to warm them up and get blood circulation in the muscles . .

After to step down the muscle stress and contractions gradually so they don't seize up.

(sort of like taking a walk after running , you don't just stop running)

Before...during...and after workouts. You should stretch many times a day to reduce injury, keep you limber, keep the blood flowing, hyperfascia. It helps to recover from workouts. Trust me, it's easier to tear a tight muscle than it is to tear a loose one.
