Why do I get stitch when I am running

health advisory Diet Diet 2007-11-11 21:06:10

I have tried the following things to prevent this hence the picking of your brains:

1) Not eating from lunchtime onwards and running at seven

2)Not starting too fast

3) Not drinking any fluids during running or for over an hour before

4) Meditation for a few minutes before hand to tell my body that it isn't a habit (bit drastic but you know it is rather irritating and preventing my fitness from improving)

I need some expertise on this matter please

Thanks guys :-)

Answer:

when you exercise your muscle cells are undergoing metabolic processes which turn glucose from your food intake into other chemicals which can be used to release energy along with oxygen carried around your body. However, sometimes when we exercise not enough oxygen is taken in, especially if someone is unfit but not just them, and this means your muscles undergo anaerobic respiration. This process changes glucose to a type of acid instead of the chemicals used to make energy, and a build up of the acid (lactic acid) causes the pain which you know as a stitch. To stop this happening you need to take in more oxygen-breathe more deeply and become fitter as your lung capacity will then increase and your heart will be able to pump oxygen faster.
