Why are young people so worried about their weight

health advisory Diet Diet 2007-11-11 21:04:44

There's a lot of "I'm 5' something, I weigh 100+ lbs and am 11-19 yrs old, am I the right weight(fat, obese, whatever)?" Why not go and talk to their doctors? Isn't that what they are there for? It seems they fixate on appearance, not the real stuff, like character.

Answer:

Because they're so caught up in what the tv/magazines are showing them they should look like.

So unhealthy, ready to keel over just to look like a movie star or model..

It's a serious problem parents need to talk to their kids about..

It's called the "media". They are idolizing the images they see on tv.
Kids our age (I'm 14 going on 15) is worried about their weight because first of all, the reputation or looks at school. no one wants to be known as the 'fat kid' at school, especially if you get to junior high and high school. yes, talking to doctors might help, but some kids are afraid to confront their doctors and are often embarrassed. personality counts in high school, but it's also difficult to have a strong personality and be confident in yourself if people at school calls you the fat kid of the year.
Its the government man, look at what is on t.v. and in magazines now a days. If you arent skinny or toned to no end, then you are a fat ***. Atleast thats what they want these easily impreassonable teens to think so that they will by the pills, buy the books for the retard diets and so forth. However some of them really are fat, and should go to a doctor, but not for a pill. For advise on a proper diet, which they probably dont know what is, and proper exercise, which they probably wont do.
Movies, tabloids and skinny models on TV have given them such inferiority complexes that unless they are skinny too, they fear they will be shunned and ostracized as societal misfits.
They see that Paris Hilton and Lynsay Lohan or whoever are pencil thin and they feel that they want to look like them. Or they are getting made fun of at school for even being a little overweight. Kids are mean, and will pick on each other over just anything. It is all about what other kids think about you in school, and then what co-workers think about you after graduation. Sometimes parents and older siblings have to do with this problem, also, though. They might make a simple comment like: "Oh, look at Terri Hatcher, she is so beautiful." And while she does have a pretty face, the truth is that Terri Hatcher is maybe just a little underweight and the younger girls think that they need to look like her so they will start eating less. Then they will get more looks from the guys at school and think it is a good thing, so they keep not eating to keep losing weight. And the only way to get out of the cycle is to understand that it is not healthy and to seek help. But by that time, unfortunately, it is too late for some.
well i think they just went to be excepted by society, now a day the Media talk about beauty, all the time you see pill models on run way and magazine, it put an effect on our kids. children just went to be excepted as what is what. no body wants to be Left out. for me i Tell my kids they should learn to be their on person and not other. inner beauty that is what count.
Well said, but I do remember it was a hard time for me during those adolescent years and was very unsure of myself. There is so much emphasis put on appearance, perpetuated by the media and also just generally because that is the time hormones are flying about and physical attraction comes into play. It's a tough time for both genders, I'm sure you can remember too.
