Answer:Protien, like peanut butter, will give you energy. Because you are running a short distance, I don't think a lot of carbs (such as a bowl of pasta like marathon runners eat) will be as helpful as some protien.
Also, do not eat sugar! It will just give you energy for the first 20 min or so and then you will crash. So having something like Jolt and Redbull probably won't last you long enough for the entir 3 miles.
Carbohydrates. They have the fastest rate of conversion to usable energy (ATP) of all of the nutrients. This explains why endurance athletes "hit the wall" when their glycogen stores are depleted and why many people on low carb diets experience severe lack of energy.
Carbohydrates are the energy providers of the nutrition pyramid. You will want to stick to complex carbohydrates to stay on a healthy track. High-fiber (high-cellulose) vegetable foods are the healthiest choices for human nutrition, and intake of these foods is associated with lowered incidences of hypertension, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, etc. Examples are lettuce and broccoli. Examples of low-fiber, complex carbs are banana, tomato, squash and all cereals and grains (therefore bread and pasta), potatoes and rice. Whole grains are far better than enriched grain. And, if you choose to eat cereal, choose something low in sugar (less than 10g Sugars per serving). Sugars are SIMPLE carbohydrates and they are the enemy!
