Wisdom teeth extraction and suction
This is the second day since my all four of my wisdom teeth were extracted. I was lucky enough to not have any pain as of yet and my face hasn't noticeably swollen up. My question is what does the doctor mean by not "creating suction"? I understand that with smoking and drinking with a straw but what about natural tendency to create suction when you swallow your salvia? Is there a limit to how strong a suction can be before it interferes with the blood clot? Oh and one more question, ice cream. What type of ice cream, plain or flavored ones? Currently I have Dyer's strawberry ice cream with bits of strawberrys. Is that good or should I go buy plain vanilia ice cream? Thanks :D.
Answer:Swallowing doesn't create that much of a suction, stay away from straws, smoking, carbonation, and anything with small pieces of stuff in it. Strawberry, corn meal, poppy seeds etc... All these things can get trapped in the hole and become an infection. The suction and carbonation is so you don't pull out the clot, that will be the most painful thing you will ever experience. Smoking is bad for two reasons, the suction for the above reason and nicotine will lesson the blood flow to the area and hinder healing. I've seen it...it is disgusting. The doctor I work for won't do a procedure on someone who smokes until they have quit permanently for several months. That is how bad it compromises healing.
I was sucking my saliva and trying not to drool. . . .and I healed up just fine. I was REALLY careful not to use straws though.
