In the olden days - even before I was around - they called black calculus "blood calculus," because it was stained with blood. The source is obvious. You generally find this located totally subgingival. This is distinguished from the dark, dark brown of the calculus that develops from smoking and is supragingival.
Calculus is most normally white. Calculus can possibly range from light to dark brown due to staining, example tea or coffee, if you consume it a lot throughout the day. I have seen black calculus before which may be from heavy smoking stains. I don't know much else on this subject but staining is a key idea because as i said calculus is usually white.
