Answer:an IV is an intravenous line, a needle is stuck into a vein, generally using a vein in your hand or arm around your elbow, or in between. an IV starts as a saline solution (normal salt water), and they will inject medicine into the either the IV bag, and that will drip into the IV tubing, which is connected to the needle, or they will inject medication into the IV tubing. If they are going to sedate you for this, it will probably go into the IV tubing, but if they are giving you antibiotics, which I'm sure they will, they will more than likely inject that into the IV bag itself, and let the saline solution with the antibiotic drip into your bloodstream. The advantages of an IV are so that medication will get into your bloodstream faster.
It really isn't that painful, it's just a lil' sting when they insert the needle- if the person knows what they are doing.
