It's caused by a virus and there really isn't anything you can do to speed up it's healing time. I know they hurt like crazy though. Some folks find over the counter topical aids helpful to soothe the pain, but they don't seem to speed recovery. I have recommended warm salt water rinses to help with the discomfort too. In general, canker sores seem to pop up when you are under stress or if you are fighting off a cold or flu (or have just gotten over an illness). They seem to happen when the bodys immune system is overloaded fighting something else. Wish I could give you a magic cure, but you'll just have to wait it out, usually 5 to 7 days. Good luck.

I get them because of toothpaste.

You can get creams/gels to put on them or these little patches to cover them. These things will numb it so you can eat and drink without it being irritated.

Other than that, you just need to wait it out. They can take as long as 3 weeks to go away or as short as 4 days.

If you get them often enough that they're interupting your life you can try using toothpaste to prevent them. It's more expensive and doesn't foam so for me it didn't feel like it was actually cleaning my teeth but it did taste good atleast! lol.

You could also get pills from your doctor but I'm sure that'd be expensive.
